Have you been thinking about going solar? You’ll want to make that happen now.
The federal government offers a hefty tax credit for solar installations. But it’s an incentive that’s about to expire at the end of the year.
Miss the deadline, and you could lose thousands of dollars in tax credits.
What Is the Federal Solar Tax Credit?
The Residential Clean Energy Credit allows homeowners to claim 30% of their solar installation costs as a tax credit. Let’s say you invest $20,000 in a solar system. You could get up to $6,000 back when you file your taxes.
This credit has been very helpful for many families. It makes solar energy more affordable and accessible.
Why Is It Ending?
Recent legislative changes have accelerated the end of this credit.
On July 4, 2025, President Trump signed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” into law, which includes provisions to terminate the residential solar tax credit. Starting January 1, 2026, new solar installations will no longer qualify for the federal incentive.
While the credit was originally set to phase down gradually, the new law has fast-tracked its expiration.
How to Qualify for the Credit
To qualify for the 30% tax credit, you must have a fully installed solar system generating power by December 31, 2025. That includes having your system connected to the grid and working.
Installing solar can take weeks and sometimes even months. Thus, it’s important that you start planning right away. Delays could keep you from qualifying for the credit.
Additional Incentives in New Mexico
New Mexico homeowners have an extra reason to go solar. That is the New Solar Market Development Tax Credit (NSMDTC). This offers another 10% tax credit on the cost of your solar system, up to $6,000.
Unlike the federal credit, the NSMDTC is available for systems put in between March 1, 2020, and December 31, 2031. In other words, even after the federal credit ends, New Mexico residents can still benefit.
Benefits of Going Solar
For a lot of New Mexico homeowners, particularly those in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, solar energy is a smart choice. It lowers your electricity bills. It also increases your home’s value and delivers energy independence.
With the combined federal and state tax credits, the upfront cost of installation really goes down, which makes solar even more appealing. Plus, solar systems require little maintenance and can last 25–30 years.
